Restylane® and Perlane®
The Restylane family of products includes Restylane-L, and Perlane-L which are cosmetic dermal fillers that restore volume to the skin and soften facial wrinkles and folds. They are made of hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide moisture and fullness to the skin.
Restylane-L is a versatile filler. It can be used to increase fullness and enhance the lips, define the lip line, fill scars, and plump up facial areas that have lost their youthful appearance. One very common instance of “facial deflation” is the area under the eyes that becomes hollow, creating a worn-out, tired look. This area can be restored by filling the tear trough area with Restylane or Perlane.
Perlane gel particles are larger than those in Restylane, which makes Perlane a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin or areas that have a greater volume loss.
Avoid using aspirin or any similar anti-inflammatory medication, vitamin E supplements, or fish oil 5-7 days prior to your appointment because these may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
The most commonly observed side effects are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness at the injection site. These are typically mild in severity and resolve in 7-14 days.
Studies have shown that the average Restylane treatment results last between six and nine months, and in some cases, even longer. Restylane treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Evidence shows that having a touch-up treatment before the Restylane has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.
